A Little Application

My granddaughter Hero is three, and she was being instructed by her mother on her duties to be cheerful because apparently she had been fussin’ a bit. She listened to her mother and said, “Yes ma’am” she would quit the fussin’. As she turned to go, she looked over her shoulder and told her mother, “I’ll try to be cheerful. But it’s hard not being God.”

The Beauty of Modesty, Cultivating Virtue in the Face of a Vulgar Culture

By David Vaughan and Diane Vaughan,
Cumberland Press, 2005, 226pp.

Here is a book on modesty that is readable, helpful, thoughtful, carefully written, and doesn’t call women to dress like they lived in the last century.

Rather than beginning with a list of what to wear and what not to wear, this book begins by laying out a Christian worldview and ends with a call to discipleship. Intermingled in the middle is much on men and women, marriage, childrearing, and even worship. So if you think this is a book just for women, you are mistaken. Though all women would benefit from reading it, I think men would profit from it as well. It is hard-hitting when it comes to attacking pornography and its harmful effects on the family, and the widespread immorality that has spread into the church. Though the women have much to repent of, the men need to lead the way, and not by means of pietism or legalism. Continue reading ‘Book Plug’

Wakeup Call

I love those who thunder out the Word. The Christian world is in a deep sleep! Nothing but a loud voice can awaken them out of it. -George Whitefield

Contentment Can Swim

Somewhere or other in the worst flood of trouble there always is a dry spot for contentment to get its foot on. If there were not, it would learn to swim.

More on Sabbath Feasting

Sabbath dinner presents challenges and blessings if it is done weekly. And though most church families do eat together, feasting is setting the bar higher. So here are a few thoughts about how we can overcome some of the obstacles while we learn to apply the principle of eating our bread with joy (Eccl. 9:7).

1. The table is central to our worship and to our lives in our homes. Sabbath feasting is a victory celebration. Christ has won! We win! Celebrate!

            Application: Do it now.

Challenge:  The temptation is to put it off until another year. Don’t be afraid, don’t compare it to others, just do it by faith. Yes, it will be a lot of work. But it is good work.

2. It is not enough to just be eating. There must be joy, rejoicing. Better a meal of vegetables where there is peace than feasting with strife. Our Sabbath celebration is an overflow of joy, not a burden under the law of another rule.

Application: Create an atmosphere conducive to feasting.

Challenges: Forsake the Martha attitude. We are rejoicing in the Lord. It’s a party!

Mercy Multiplies

God is more willing to pardon than to punish. Mercy does more multiplying in Him than sin in us. Mercy is His nature. -Thomas Watson
