Give Yourself a Good Job Description

This is a pep talk I gave somewhere about how God takes the tasks that we do (as we offer them up to Him), no matter how mundane they may seem to us, and He uses them to transform the culture around us.

Women often give themselves a poor job description. This happens all the time. (“I’m just a stay-at-home mom. Excuse me for living.”) But God has given us good work to do and we should realize how much He values it and how effective it really is.

Scripture tells women to adorn themselves in good works (1 Tim. 2:9-10). A couple Continue reading ‘Give Yourself a Good Job Description’

Grace Getting Ground

They are advanced indeed that are at home in God, and live a life of communion with him, not only in solemn ordinances, but even in the common accidents and occurrences of the world. Every day is a sabbath day, a day of ‘holy rest’ with the meek and quiet soul, that is, one of the days of heaven. As this grace gets ground, the comforts of the Holy Ghost grow stronger and stronger according to that precious promise, ‘The meek also shall increase their joy in the Lord, and the poor among men shall rejoice in the Holy One of Israel’ (Isa. 24:19).  -Matthew Henry, The Quest for Meekness and Quietness of Spirit

Lowly Gentleness

The fruit of the Spirit is….gentleness. What does that mean? To be gentle is to be easily handled, tame, kindly serene, mild, not violent, not harsh, not rough. Like all the other fruit of the Spirit, this gentleness is first displayed in God.

God is Gentle

Psalm 18:35b “Thy gentleness hath made me great.”

Jesus is Gentle.

Matthew 11:28-29 Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

Paul behaved with gentleness.

1 Thessalonians 2:7 But we were gentle among you, just as a nursing mother cherishes her own children. So, affectionately longing for you, we were well pleased to impart to you not only the gospel of God, but also our own lives, because you had become dear to us. For Continue reading ‘Lowly Gentleness’

Beautiful Grandchildren

Our daughter and her husband and kids made it safely back to Moscow from the UK, and we are mighty pleased and thankful. One of these days I will get a short course on how to post a pic (Valerie could probably help me…), but since I don’t know how yet, I’m going to send you to my husband’s blog instead. He put up a couple of pics, one of a bunch of grandchildren eating corn on the cob, and another from the fourth of July. Hope you enjoy! dougwils.com

Milk and Honey

When I was fresh out of college and a relatively new Christian, I spent the summer working at a presbyterian church with the youth ministry. I had a lot of respect for the pastor and his wife, and it was a profitable summer in many ways. One of the leaders of the team was an unmarried man a few years older than I was, and though he was fine to work with, I had no interest in him beyond that. One day the pastor took me aside and asked me what my ideal man was like. I was very much surprised by the question and gave a vague answer. He asked me if my ideal man was tall? Yes, I assumed he would be tall. But what if God wanted me to marry a short man, the pastor asked me. All this was of course leading up to the question about this particular unmarried man who was quite a bit shorter than I. I cringed. Would God want me to marry this man? Yikes, I thought. And there was far more involved in Continue reading ‘Milk and Honey’

First Things First

Our security lies not in our faithfulness, but in the faithfulness of God and His Word…..

So our faithfulness is not the ground of our confidence; rather, our confidence is the ground of our faithfulness.
