It’s been pretty quiet around here, and we are twiddling our thumbs trying to think of something tame to post about. But brace yourself, because Heather is probably going to cannonball back into the water shortly with another fun with politics post. But not until she has recovered from the birthday endurance test.
She has spent the last several days planning and executing a three-day birthday bash for her two girls, who are almost Irish twins, being one year and two days apart. So, Sunday was Lucy’s 5th bday with all the trimmings, today was the joint bday party with all the little-girl friends (more cake), and tomorrow is Ameera’s 4th birthday, and they will do it all over again, sparing no pains!
I believe the birthday liturgy involves pancakes in the morning followed by the great gift opening. Then in the evening is the family birthday dinner and birthday cake gala, followed by more presents. So not only did the parents have all this to Continue reading ‘The Birthday Marathon’

So – yesterday I was going through our pictures of our trip to Holland in June so that I could put up a very delinquent post on our family blog. In doing so I ran across this picture which cracks me up extensively. Somehow it just seems so appropriate. I love Hero there in the middle – summing up “The Merkles do Amsterdam!” And don’t I just look like I’m plotting something extremely nefarious?
There appears to have been a dust up over the faux bottle.
Well hello all. I have been pretty busy with life here on the ground, so it wasn’t until late this afternoon that I had a moment to survey all the mashed peas and carrots on the floor around my table. But I was grateful that my very capable daughter-in-law Heather had blown the whistle. And I was also appreciative for the many humble responses she got as well.
I would like to encourage those of you who would like to continue the discussion to move on over to my husband’s blog where he will be posting on events as they unfold. But I would like for the discussion here on femina, as regards Mrs. Palin, to be closed for now. Call it a breather.
And, as a sort of wrap up, I’d like to make a few observations. Here they are.
Whether you think it is right or not for a woman to hold office in the White House, one thing is clear, and that is that we cannot talk about it yet the way we need to. Maybe we need more prep time.
Secondly, I do not see any reason in the world why any Christian woman should be threatened by Sarah Palin. My calling as a wife and mother, my view of God’s role assignments for men and women are all the same as they were before she was nominated. Nothing has changed. She threatens none of that for me.
It is also clear to me that although many Christian women say that they have a very high view of woman’s calling, for some it appears to be a brittle veneer for what they really think about women.
So onward. I recommend you all whip up a batch of cookies and knit a bootie. Or, you can do as I am going to do, which is pour myself a glass of wine. Cheers!
Hello everyone. I must say that some the recent comments in the Palin discussion have reached the level of truly appalling. The fact that this is an online conversation does not mean our Christian graciousness and decorum should go out the window. These are our sisters (and brothers) in Christ. Some of you may not have much practice in thinking through your faith/decisions/scriptural interpretations out loud with others but it can be done without hurling insults. Meeting people who approach things differently than ourselves can be a great opportunity to get grounded in what we already believe (as it causes more thought, study and searching of the scriptures). And sometimes (believe it or not, boys and girls), we find that we’ve been wrong. By all means, let’s continue our conversation but if we can’t speak charitably with one another, there’s no point.
Cheers,
Heather
