Repent or Perish!

Here are my little Dutchgirls (both in real life and pretend!) As you can see, we really go in for scary costumes!

And here are our little twin- bobs, funnier than ever. And in case you were wondering due to our inspecific clothing, Chloe is on the left, Titus on the right.

So, happy Trick or Reformation to you and yours!

On the Job

One of the things my husband enjoys immensely is engaging in debate over the truth of the gospel. So he is having a fabulous time on the East Coast traveling with and debating Christopher Hitchens. They have just arrived in Philadelphia after being flown from NYC via helicopter. Though Doug spent several years in the submarine service, he had never flown in a helicopter, and he said it was a great ride. They flew around the Statue of Liberty and then down to Philly. A photographer friend of my daughter-in-law’s parents happened to be in New York yesterday and attended the first debate at King’s College. She snapped this pic and kindly sent it on. Many of you have said you are praying for Doug, and I thank you all very much!

A Sweet Blog

My sister-in-law has a new blog called “Sweet Peas and Happy Things,” which is a fitting name for it because she is a devoted wife and mother, an avid gardener, homemaker, cook, and seamstress. As long as I have known her (she married my brother over thirty years ago)  she has been characterized by sweetness. So take a look at a very sweet blog.

Fancify your Huggies box!

This was one of those fun unplanned projects that go a long way toward filling up the tanks of your local ballerinas. We are working on scissor skills, so I let her lay into a catalog with some and Elmer’s glue it like there was no tomorrow! The end result was pretty wacked out of scale but still fun. Daphne assisted by cutting bitlets of paper and dumping about a tablespoon of glue onto them while saying things like “that’s probly enough, huh?”  It was. The above picture was taken before she cut the toes off of her tights.

Large Hearts

I was talking with a friend the other day about how limited we can feel some times, but in a different way than I was describing in the post called Two Hands. It has more to do with the concept of enlarging our hearts, expanding our capacity to give and enjoy, to handle interruptions, to meet needs, to adjust to change, to give some more.

For example, some women adore having lots of people coming and going all the time, and it refreshes and rejuvenates them. Others can only take so much before they need a little time out. And some women are completely undone at even the thought of having company for dinner. It’s as though we each have a container of a different size, and we can only take in so much before we start to spill all over floor. Some have a teaspoon that is threatening to spill over any minute. Others have a gallon jug that can take quite a bit of jostling before it slops over.

The Christian life involves community, and that can’t happen without a lot of coming and going. Call it a blessed chaos. Mothers certainly have to have the means to deal with many things all at once all the time. I believe that God equips us to do all that He calls us to do, but sometimes we start thinking we have the resources in ourselves to do it ourselves. Ha! Those are the times that we trip up and slosh all over the floor. But God has infinite resources and He wants to give us more and more. So we should ask Him to increase our capacity, increase the size of our containers (so to speak), so that we can handle all that He gives us graciously and gracefully.
