Oh my! Bekah, I do think you all attract such interesting situations to your lives, partly because you handle them with such a great sense of humor, and give so many of us a lot of laughs in reading about them. Thanks for the entertainment and lessons in contentment.

All right. I just laugh so loud at these stories. I'm so sorry you have to experience them though!! You're a great story-teller if that makes you feel any better! My worst experience with a hotel (actually a B &B) was on our wedding night. We showed up straight from our reception, me a blushing bride with a veil still on my head, only to find out that our reservation (which had been confirmed by my husband weeks before) was canceled. And to make matters worse, they had just rented the room to another couple two hours before our arrival. After some major juggling (remember it's a Bed and Breakfast so not too many rooms) they got us a place to stay. All they offered us was a free dinner for our trouble. And we sat in the waiting room for a few hours! My poor husband. I think they figured that we were too young to cause much of a fuss. It was still a great night but it was quite a shock.

Wow. This is actually worse than our bad hotel story, which involved horrors such as cigarette burns in the sheets, old dried-up toothpaste on the bathroom counter, and a night full of rodents running around in the ceiling and chattering at us through the air ducts. All in a four star hotel which we later discovered was condemned two weeks after our stay. I seriously think your ants story tops all that. I'm curious to know how you end up being officially rid of them.

Pamela is absolutely correct that upper management wants to know when there is a challenge like this for any guest. I am the General Manager of the Ramada you visited and certainly apologize for the inconveniences you encountered.
Please know that this is not our normal standard. Guest feedback is extremely valuable to us and we utilize each guest response by continuing to focus on making each and every guest experience the best it can be.
We were notified by the person that made your reservation of the problems you encountered. I immediately investigated the items she called about and viewed the mattress in question. It appeared the casing seam around the top of the mattress had lost its stitching, therefore exposing the inside of the mattress, springs & stuffing. It was not an old or necessarily excessively worn mattress, but was immediately replaced. We would never knowingly expose a guest to this.
Regarding the ants, unfortunately this colder time of year they seek to find a warm place. We have a contracted pest control service here in the hotel twice a month t avoid any type of problems. Unfortunately sometimes those pests still get through. For the other posters thoughts regarding bed bugs, you can be SURE that it was not bed bugs.
Although not the normal way we visit with guests concerning any problems, I appreciate being able to post to your blog regarding your recent stay.
I would like to provide you with a discount during a future stay. When calling to make the reservation, please ask for me and I will personally assist you.
It is our hope that you will give us another opportunity to serve you. Again, I apologize for the inconveniences during your stay and hope to see you during your next visit.

Funny coincidence: Shortly after reading this, I visited my husband's cousin's blog. She and her family are Americans living in (you guessed it) the UK. And her post was all about their recent saga of eradicating bed bugs from their home—bed bugs that they had picked up in a hotel. Your American ants sound downright friendly after reading about those British bed bugs! (Aren't you glad to be home?)

When I was a 14 year old boy, my family moved from Texas toSpokane WA. We stayed at my Aunt's in Idaho for a few days. I guess that nobody noticed until too late that some of the Texas roaches came with us. My aunt was less than amused to find them suddenly all over her house. I think she forgave us. Eventually.
