I Know God is For Me

From Psalm 56:

David was on the run, chased by Saul and by the Philistines. When David fears, he has a godly reflex response: when he fears, he trusts. When the ungodly are hateful, twisting his words, marking his steps, accusing and laying traps, they don’t do this because they just don’t know better. They do this on purpose, with evil intent. But David knew that God knew perfectly all that his enemies were doing, and all their steps and plans were known to Him. God’s omniscience was David’s comfort, and it should be ours as well. His omniscience is our comfort; it is for our good.

Courage is not the absence of fear, but doing what is right in spite of fear. “What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee” (vs. 3). Our God counts our every tear. He tells us to cast all our cares on Him because He cares for us. David responds in faith: “this I know; for God is for me” (vs. 9).

This is the reflex we should have: when we fear, we trust; when we fear, we have faith. This means that fear leads to trust which leads to praise. Christ is our promise and Christ is our grace. So we look to Him and conclude that “God is for me.” “I will not fear what man can do unto me” (vs. 11).

Hand-stitched Gifts

You all know Valerie from her regular comments here on Femina. She recently visited Moscow and brought each of us gals a little framed monogram she had hand-stitched. Now aren’t those fun? Thanks, Valerie!

Please keep praying for Sophia.

I got this update from Sophia’s mom Kelly. Please be praying for her! (To get up to speed on earlier posts, just look under the prayer request category.)
Thank you for asking about Sophia. She came down with a virus this past Lord’s Day – a thick, tight cough which she wasn’t able to move well.  Because of the floppiness of her airway, it’s difficult for her to clear that kind of junk out, and due to the way her respiratory system is compromised, it hits her fast and takes her down quickly .  I was able to take her to the pediatrician right away on Monday and she is on an antibiotic.  She had a bumpy couple of nights at the beginning of the week – but she is improving.  God is merciful!
We will be in Cincinnati on the 25th for pre-op – bloodwork, chest x-ray, EKG, etc.  The surgery will be early on Tuesday.  The surgeon expects she will be released by Friday.  I will be staying in the hospital with her, while Glenn goes back and forth from home for our other children, and his work. What My Husband Learned in Narnia

My husband cut his teeth on Narnia, for his parents started reading the stories to the kids pretty much as soon as the books were published. And then when our kids were growing up, I don’t know how many times he read them out loud to them. So this book is coming from someone who’s been traveling in Narnia for over fifty years! This is another one of Canon’s fresh pickin’s, due to come out the day after Thanksgiving. And, yes, you can pre-order. Just keeping you posted!

Bessie’s Silver Spoon

This is quite a little surprise I have to tell you about. Today I had coffee with a college gal who is heading home to Florida after finishing her degree at New St. Andrews. We have gotten together from time to time over the years, and this time was to say our goodbyes. She brought me a little something that her mother had sent for me. It was a beautiful little silver sugar spoon, and as I looked closer I realized Wilson was engraved on the handle. And then when I looked a little more closely, I saw it had E.C. Wilson engraved on the handle. This brought me up short. These are my mother-in-law Bessie’s initials (Elizabeth Catherine). And then I read the note. She bought the little spoon at an antique store in Monterey, California a couple of years ago and was saving it for a friend. But then she noticed the intials, and she knew that Bessie had passed away a few weeks ago, so she sent it to me instead. The amazing part of all this is that Jim and Bessie lived in Monterey while Jim attended the Navy War College around 1954. Then they moved  to Japan, where Heather was born. I’m wondering if this could have be a wedding gift that got left behind when it came time to lighten their load to move overseas. Who knows where that little spoon has been all these years? Rachel commented to me that it was kind of God to save Bessie’s keepsakes for us by having other people hold on to them! What a sweet treasure to receive it now.

Some Random Yarny Deeds

Hello! It has been quite a while and I am very sorry about it! I just went through another one of those phases where I compose mental blogposts, but never actually do it. I have a picture (dark and ugly, that’s why you never saw it) to prove that I thought of you when I made pumpkin pancakes. But more importantly – I am blogging right now! I felt like I should share that I finally made a sweater for Lina, and a random toy for Titus. Here they are – isn’t that alien hilarious?

The pattern for the sweater is one I made before called “drive-thru”  by Wendy Bernard. The softie is called “22 the alien”, and you can buy both the patterns through ravelry if you feel so inclined. I am thinking he will look pretty cute sticking his head out of the top of a Christmas stocking. And speaking of Christmas stockings, I just realized today that Blaire doesn’t have one yet. And speaking of Blaire….. this little fireball of cuteness must be where all my energy is going lately – quite literally!
