Happy New Year!

Wishing you all a Very Happy and Blessed New Year!

Good bye to 2010, and Welcome 2011!

And since it is also our 35th Wedding Anniversary today, I had to put us up in living color out in our yard amidst the glorious snow. I thanked my husband once again for the very wise thing he did in asking me to marry him. And glad I am that I snatched him up!

Cozy Noggins

It is pretty snowy around here. Believe it or not, this photo was taken on my front porch looking out at the world. There is not a lot in nature to look at, although you can see the faint outline of our candy cane lights! I made these hats for the kids to match their new coats (which Lina is not wearing right now – oh well, I like the burst of sherbet). I realized that I never took any pictures of them, and it is a miracle that they are all wearing them still. At least one or two have been in the school’s lost-and-found. Actually it may have been the same one twice. Either way, now that I have documented them in photos, I don’t care where they end up!

But, speaking of hats, I was talking to a friend and fellow-knitter who also has a daughter in Daphne’s class. She knit the cutest little hats for her girls, but one of them vanished its first day at school, and weeks later, there had still been no Continue reading ‘Cozy Noggins’

Little Surprises

In my post-Christmas, post-flu clean-up mode, I was scrubbing bathrooms this a.m. The hall bath is a guest bath, so though it is often used by visiting grandchildren, et al, the tub is seldom used, and is therefore not on the regular weekly cleaning list. So it has, apparently, been long neglected, as I discovered today when I pulled back the shower curtain. There was my missing scrub brush which I forgot to put away when I was scrubbing the window screens some weeks ago! Aha! I was so pleased to find that thing because I had been hunting for it. But imagine my delight when I also found the three, or was it four, missing green beans! There they were, much to my surprise. And mighty glad I am that I didn’t send some unsuspecting guest in for a bath.

Bring on the daffodils!

Although traditionally I am completely over the Christmas decor by Christmas evening, I think the aforementioned stomach bug that rampaged through the house has added to the urgency. At this point I would like to redecorate in the soothing colors of Lysol. Our tree still looks good, so it is not as totally urgent right now, but all these little things from around the house… Goodbye! Looking forward to seeing you next year!

Lean Hard

This year we had a family flu bug (oh, yes, and a pink eye bug) that traveled through the grandchildren and some of the parents during the week before Christmas. Then we were all healthy Christmas Day, so we gathered together and rejoiced all day long. Then on Sunday that nasty little flu bug began traveling through the rest of the family, hitting the remaining grandkids and even catching me.  Now we are all in various stages in the recovery zone. But what a kindness that no one was sick on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. It does slow down the post-Christmas mop up, but that is no emergency. But what is the flu compared to the  heavy burdens of grief and loss many of our friends are carrying this Christmas? A short bout with the flu is helpful as a good reminder that we live in a world that includes little sufferings like the flu and big sufferings like cancer and death.

For those who have suffered real loss and have been grieving this Christmas, it is a good time to keep Christian grief in perspective. We have a Savior who is a Man of sorrows and acquainted grief. He knows like no one else. He calls us to cast Continue reading ‘Lean Hard’

Christmas Mac and Cheese

I know you have probably figured out your Christmas Eve menu by now, so here’s a suggestion for later in Christmas Week or for New Year’s Day or whenever. I found this recipe on the Pioneer Woman’s blog, and it’s called Fancy Macaroni. It has carmelized onion, bacon, and some lovely cheeses: Gruyere, goat cheese, fontina, and parmesan….okay, so are you convinced? I made it for our dinner tonight, which we’ll enjoy after the Christmas Eve service. Right now it is sitting in the fridge, but not before I had a sample (and Doug had a sample and my sis-in-law Meredith had a sample) and we all agree it is amazing. And it’s a good thing that it’s all locked up in the fridge or I’m afraid it would be long gone by evening!
