(What Would Douglas Wilson Download?)

So in case you haven’t noticed, I’ve been a bit absent. I miss you all, really I do. And special thanks to those of you (you know who you are) who take time to remind me of my obvious abdication of blogging duties. Too much to say and not enough time to distill the brilliance. But you knew that already. And there are all those crafts I’ve been doing.

To make up for my Femina neglect (and since I still have nothing at all of interest to say), I’ve decided to stage a contest. Good clean family fun. Here’s the back story. My father-in-law, Douglas Wilson, has quite the music collection. Lots of Classic Rock, Blues, that sorts of stuff. Anyway, for Father’s day, Nate and decided to make him a mix with songs we knew wouldn’t already be in his library – songs we wanted him to listen to, or songs he might enjoy, or songs that amuse us. Then we gave him an itunes card to purchase those he liked. He ended up downloading five of the eighteen. Not bad, says I. The question at hand for all who care to try, is which ones did the good Rev. Wilson choose from the below playlist (one guess per person, please). Whoever either guesses first or comes closest in this next week will receive an itunes card. Good luck and may the force be with you.

1. Clocks, Coldplay
2. Hard Sun, Eddie Vedder
3. Kryptonite, 3 Doors Down
4. Viva la Vida, Coldplay
5. Girl And The Ghost, KT Tunstall

Just proving that I’m new around here and don’t really know the good reverend that well at all. *wink*

  3. Great mix! That’s a great gift too. father-in-laws are hard to shop for.
    Here’s a wild guess: #9, 12, 15, 16, and 17.

  4. 4. Viva la Vida, Coldplay
    7. American Baby, Dave Matthews Band
    9. The Saints Are Coming, U2 & Green Day
    16. Soul Meets Body, Death Cab for Cutie
    17. F-Stop Blues, Jack Johnson

    “…I know nary a one!”

Same here, Valerie. But I figure I might as well try. I picked #16 just because the name “Death Cab for Cutie” is so funny. I think it must be a lost Flannery O’Connor story.

  5. Okay- I’m picking these competely by random choice. So, if I win, it will be totally of the Lord! (Not that it wouldn’t be if I hadn’t been random… LOL)

    Viva la Vida, Coldplay
    American Baby, Dave Matthews Band
Soul Meets Body, Death Cab for Cutie
    All Because Of You, U2
    F-Stop Blues, Jack Johnson

    Heather

PS- the Coldplay is my hubby’s choice!

  6. All these things that I’ve done- Killers
    Flake – Jack Johnson
    1234- Fiest
Girl and the Ghost- KT Tunstall
    Bittersweet Symphony- the Verve

  7. 2. Hard Sun, Eddie Vedder
    6. 1 2 3 4, Feist
    9. The Saints Are Coming, U2 & Green Day
    14. To Zion, Lauryn Hill
    15. All These Things That I’ve Done, The Killers

  8. John and I had fun looking these over. Here is my list:

    #2 Hard Sun
    #4 Viva La Vida
    #9 The Saints Are Coming
    #17 F Stop Blues
    #18 Kingdom Come

  9. 7. American Baby, Dave Matthews Band

    8. Bittersweet Symphony, The Verve

    14. To Zion, Lauryn Hill

    15. All These Things That I’ve Done, The Killers

    18. Kingdom Come, Coldplay (yes, I’m one of those Coldplay fans)

I picked 8 and 14 because I like them, and the others because the titles seemed like titles he’d use for blog posts, if he could acurately reference them.

  10. Hard Sun
    Girl and the Ghost
    Flake
    F-Stop Blues
    The Zephyr Song

Clues from his past choices: blues, acoustic strings, clear vocals.

  11. 1. Clocks, Coldplay
    6. 1 2 3 4, Feist
    7. American Baby, Dave Matthews Band
    10. The Zephyr Song, Red Hot Chili Peppers
    17. F-Stop Blues, Jack Johnson

I think I shall have to check out these tunes (all 18) myself

  12. Alas, not more than 15 years ago I was general manager of my college radio station. Now I am so out of touch that I do not recognize any of those songs! Of course, if I heard them I might know them.

I am now the out of touch mid aged mom I always swore I would not grow up to be!

  13. Viva la Vida, Coldplay
    1 2 3 4, Feist
The Saints Are Coming, U2 & Green Day
    Flake, Jack Johnson
    American Baby, Dave Matthews Band

    Here goes nothing!

  14. Howdy all and thanks for playing…So far our top contestant has gotten three songs right. Go team, go. And Valerie, you can go to the itunes store to hear a sampling of the songs (they’re probably all there).

  15. 6. 1 2 3 4, Feist
    5. Girl And The Ghost, KT Tunstall
    12. All Because Of You, U2
    16. Soul Meets Body, Death Cab for Cutie
    2. Hard Sun, Eddie Vedder

  16. Heather, yeah, I thought of that, but decided it would take far more energy than my cold-weakened body and more care than my cold-addled brain could muster. I’ll let natural selection take its course here and leave it to the young, strong, hip ones to win the contest. 😉

  17. Okay…totally a guess…2, 5, 7, 12, 18.

Heather, it looks like we have a similiar taste in music. I’ll be thinking of you when I’m at the Coldplay concert on July 25th!

  18. 9. The Saints Are Coming, U2 & Green Day
    12. All Because of You, U2
    14. To Zion, Lauryn Hill
    15. All These Things That I’ve Done, The Killers
    18. Kingdom Come, Coldplay

Just a guess. U2 because we like some U2 (haven’t listened to all U2 songs). The others because they sound interesting.

  19. I can’t compete. But I can share one of my favorite quips from the Gilmore Girls:

BRIAN: We were as tight as the Foo Fighters.

GIL: Tighter. Listen, if that pretentious little snot in Coldplay can walk around comparing himself to Bono, we can compare ourselves to the Foo Fighters.

I’m guessing, no Coldplay. Maybe U2.

  20. Hard Sun
    F-Stop Blues
    Kingdom Come
    Bittersweet Symphony
    Young Folks

I love your playlist – by the way. Especially Viva la Vida. 🙂

  21. Well, this is good to pass up, so how about…

    1 2 3 4
    Hard Sun
    Young Folks
    Saints
    F-stop Blues

Although, I’m thinking Kate’s picks might just win.

  22. 2, 4, 7, 15, 17
Welcome back Heather! I’ve really missed giggling into my fist…Please post more often!

  23. 5. Girl And The Ghost, KT Tunstall
    6. 1 2 3 4, Feist
    10. The Zephyr Song, Red Hot Chili Peppers
    17. F-Stop Blues, Jack Johnson
    18. Kingdom Come, Coldplay

  24. Here’s my guess:

    1 2 3 4, Fiest
Girl and the Ghost, KT Tunstall
    F-Stop Blues, Jack Johnson
    Til Kingdom Come, Coldplay
    Hard Sun,Eddie Vedder

  25. Three is still the number to beat. And for the record, I’ve never been one of the cool kids when it comes to music. Just friends with them. The biggest advantage being that I’m free to like bands even after they’ve been discovered by the masses and are so not hip.

Anyway, I think anyone whose first cassettes were Amy Grant and Michael W. Smith loses any chance at coolness for the rest of their life ( I suppose I could make excuses as they were a Christmas gift along with my ghetto blaster at the rip age of ten but my choices of George Michael, Faith and INXS, Kick, and Rick Astley, Never Gonna Give You Up weren’t light years better).

  26. Mom typing as Anna picks songs…..

    4. Viva la Vida, Coldplay
    9. The Saints Are Coming, U2 & Green Day
    11. Flake, Jack Johnson
    13. Young Folks, Peter Bjorn and John
    18. Kingdom Come, Coldplay

  27. Hey, come on, George Michael is kinda fun. 🙂

I’m not venturing a guess, because I’m lazy. But I love Lauryn Hill. I hope he liked that one.

  28. “Anyway, I think anyone whose first cassettes were Amy Grant and Michael W. Smith loses any chance at coolness for the rest of their life….”

Kindred spirits! No MWS here (I learned quite quickly the hard way that friends aren’t always friends forever when the Lord’s the Lord of them), but I remember making my very first cassette purchase — Amy’s “Age to Age” — at age 14 or 15 after a youth event at which I first heard some of her songs. And since it was of my own volition, I’m more hopeless than you are.

  29. I was just giggling that b/c I don’t keep up with music much at all anymore! But my first cassettes were Madonna and Cyndi Lauper. My parents didn’t have enough oversight, it seems… Oh Wait! My mom did buy me EmmyLou Harris when I was 5 and asked for Rock-n-Roll because I heard it was good stuff. Now you all know, EmmyLou isn’t rock (or maybe she is now? but wasn’t then!) but I didn’t know any better! That was an 8-track!

Anyhow, I thought it was eating organic lettuce that made someone uncool for life… 🙂

  30. Heather- I’m new to this blog, and this is the first post of yours I’ve seen (so, you must have been neglecting your duties. . .). And I’m always suspicious of new people, admittedly, but your last comment put me over the edge, in your favor. We are kindred spirits, and maybe the same age- the first music I paid attention to was exactly what you mentioned: Amy Grant, MWS, George Michael, INXS and Rick Astley. What a blast to the past with your ghetto-blaster reference. Thanks for the giggle! Now for my vote-

    2. Hard Sun, Eddie Vedder
    5. Girl And The Ghost, KT Tunstall
    12. All Because Of You, U2 (I know our CRE pastor loves U2!)
    17. F-Stop Blues, Jack Johnson
    18. Kingdom Come, Coldplay

  31. Wow, that was really tough, you’ve got a great mix there! I’m particularly happy that you put Young Folks on there. 🙂 But I don’t know if Pastor Wilson would like it, so here’s my guess:

    2. Hard Sun, Eddie Vedder
    4. Viva la Vida, Coldplay
    7. American Baby- Dave Matthews
    15. All These Things That I’ve Done, The Killers
    18. Kingdom Come, Coldplay

  32. Do I detect a preacher’s kid background? This PK remembers not only buying/listening to the MWS and Amy Grant tapes, but also singing along to the soundtracks for a church special. Those were shortly followed by Steven Curtis Chapman. The rest served as skating rink music. Fun times. 🙂

  33. I am enjoying all the guesses but still no more than three correct answers. I’m hoping I don’t end up with a ten way tie.

Itunes is definitely the ticket when you want good dose of wistful nostalgia. Nothing like listening to a combo of Breakfast at Tiffany’s by Deep Blue Something and The Promise by When In Rome, throw in a little Madonna, Eagles and R.E.M’s It’s the End of the World as We Know It and I feeeeel fine. The Cure generally finds its way into my mellow mixes too. Random, I know. Nate’s draws the line, however, when he hears a dance club version of Cher come on. “Do you believe in life after love?” Makes me smile.

  34. Ruth,
I wasn’t a preacher’s kid but I did do the youth group thing for many a years. I remember it was a HUGE deal when Amy Grant had a crossover video on MTV, right along side Debbie Gibson and the likes. She might as well have gone apostate. I never sang her or MWS’s songs in church but I do recall singing “Our God is an Awesome God” an awful lot. Then there was the special Easter service renditions of “If I Ever Lose my Faith in You,” by Sting and Bette Midler’s “From A Distance.”

  35. 1. Clocks, Coldplay
    4. Viva la Vida, Coldplay
    8. Bittersweet Symphony, The Verve
    17. F-Stop Blues, Jack Johnson
    18. Kingdom Come, Coldplay

    I’m a Coldplay fan, too. 🙂

  36. Well, close to everyone seems to think there is at least one Coldplay song in the list…All you out there who like Coldplay ought really give a listen to A Secret History: the Best of the Divine Comedy. The song Viva la Vida is very much in the Divine Comedy vein.

  37. Ooouuuhhh! I’ll take a whirl (you have a good way of getting lurkers out in the open! =) )…

    1. Clocks, Coldplay
    6. 1 2 3 4, Feist
    7. American Baby, Dave Matthews Band
    8. Bittersweet Symphony, The Verve
    10. The Zephyr Song, Red Hot Chili Peppers

(As a side note: I’ve really enjoyed reading Femina’s blog. I always receive sweet encouragement and sometimes a good laugh, too. Thanks for sharing your hearts, ladies!)

  38. There are several I don’t know…so I’m going to try to check them out on itunes. If I break the computer I blame teh internetzzzz, and my absurdly competitive spirit.

  39. Everyone at this point seems to be getting 2-3 answers right. Thanks for the guesses. I’m quite certain I wouldn’t have guessed myself.

Amber, I don’t really have a personal favorite now. Nate had Lovers in Japan on repeat for a while he was writing before the album came out so I’m rather fond of it. Seamus, my toddler, currently loves to dance to Viva (and I’m Yours by Jason Mraz), and then I do like Strawberry Swing. I have simple tastes and most things (other than metal and overly angry punk) grow on me with enough listens. The hard part now is trying to be more conscientious about what I’m teaching my children to love. Realizing that maybe I should make sure I download the radio (clean version) of some songs and forgo others. I’d like them to be broader musically than I am.

  40. Here’s to random guessing:

    4/9/13/14/17

If I had more time, I’d analyze the previous comments and try to come up with the three right answers. Alas, the sands of time are sinking…

Heather, my son is reading 100 Cupboards aloud to us on our drive to church. We just found out that it can be downloaded at Library2Go; but I would miss my son’s commentary while he reads.

  41. Bittersweet Symphony, The Verve
The Saints Are Coming, U2 & Green Day
    F-Stop Blues, Jack Johnson
    To Zion, Lauryn Hill
Young Folks, Peter Bjorn and John

  42. I’m guessing it’s so not cool that I’m teaching my kids to be country music fans! Although, I do like me a little cold play now and then 🙂

  43. Uh … I don’t know any of the songs.

I have heard of U2, but don’t really know their music, so I will hazard not a guess.

    About first purchases …

    Dallas Holm (before Rise Again)
    Andrae Crouch & the Disciples
    Evie
    Larry Norman (In Another Land)
    Pat Terry Band
    Love Song

Which probably makes me more uncool than those who bought Amy & MWS.

    🙂

PS – I do like the Rev. Mr. Wilson’s blog … and books … and his perspectives …

  44. Heeeeaaaaatheeeer!!! Yeah!! I see you are making up for lost time.

I have missed your presences here. You do post such fun posts and though I love you for more then just your mind, I do love the way your mind travels. 🙂

Unfortunately I am a music baby. I can sing you all the words to a song and yet not have a clue who sings it or what the title of the song is. So I will have to leave a big fat guess just take a stab.
    2
    3
    10
    14
    16

So good to get a taste of your voice and thanks for the fun game!

  45. Maybe this has been guessed already, but:
All 5 songs written by Coldplay and/or U2.
    (#1,4,9,12,18)

I got a getto-blaster in elementary school to play my Amy Grant and Michael W. Smith tapes.

  46. Many of you have commented that you’re not familiar with the songs. The whole point of the mix was to introduce the father-in-law (and now some of you all) to something new, or at least newer. If he had heard a song and liked it, he would already have it…Hence, no Eagles, nothing from Dylan’s Slow Train Coming (one of my earliest music memories), and no Springsteen. Left off the Knofler and Van Morrison too.

    And, BTW, still no winners….

  47. Hi! This is Kamilla, Lois’ daughter. I just have a few completely random guesses. =]

    4/8/9/14/18

  48. Now I’ve got something like a twenty way tie. Someone please pull through with more than three!

  49. The tally so far:

    1. Clocks, Coldplay — 6
    2. Hard Sun, Eddie Vedder — 18
    3. Kryptonite, 3 Doors Down — 3
    4. Viva la Vida, Coldplay — 18
    5. Girl And The Ghost, KT Tunstall — 14
    6. 1 2 3 4, Feist — 16
    7. American Baby, Dave Matthews Band — 15
    8. Bittersweet Symphony, The Verve — 9
    9. The Saints Are Coming, U2 & Green Day — 16
    10. The Zephyr Song, Red Hot Chili Peppers — 8
    11. Flake, Jack Johnson — 10
    12. All Because Of You, U2 — 11
    13. Young Folks, Peter Bjorn and John — 9
    14. To Zion, Lauryn Hill — 12
    15. All These Things That I’ve Done, The Killers — 14
    16. Soul Meets Body, Death Cab for Cutie — 5
    17. F-Stop Blues, Jack Johnson — 23
    18. Kingdom Come, Coldplay — 22

  50. I’m not about to guess, but what a way to get some comments! 🙂 Great idea, and very fun reader participation. Thanks!

  51. Clocks, 1234, F-Stop Blues, Soul Meets Body, Young Folks.

    (1, 6, 13, 16, 17)

I feel like I’m playing the lottery.

And I didn’t break the internet…and I actually figured out pretty quickly how to listen to samples of songs. (Usually, I just let my husband do the listening, and then I let him know what I like, or not. Loudly.)

  52. More guesses with three correct. I’m thinking I’ll do some sort of tie breaker question if this persists. Thanks for all the participation. I don’t know that I’ll be able to generate this sort of response to another post anytime soon..

  53. Well, here’s my guess:
(These are some of my faves, too!)
    1. Clocks- Coldplay
    3. Kryptonite- 3 Doors Down
    10. The Zephyr Song- RHCP
    12. All Because of You- U2
    16. Soul Meets Body- DCFC

    P.S.
    Fantastic gift idea! Love it!

  54. Thought I’d take a stab, as everyone seems to be stabbing wildly in the dark anyway:

    7. American Baby, Dave Matthews Band
    9. The Saints Are Coming, U2 & Green Day
    13. Young Folks, Peter Bjorn and John
    15. All These Things That I’ve Done, The Killers
    16. Soul Meets Body, Death Cab for Cutie

  55. 8, 9, 12, 17, 18-my random guess. This list contains a lot of new ones for me too. I love new music suggestions, so thanks! I don’t have the time to scour the music stores listening to samples of Michael W Smith and Amy Grant like I used to. 😉 For what it’s worth, one of the most exciting moments in my (dare I admit!) teenagehood was at a Steven Curtis Chapman concert. After the last song, he threw his guitar pick. We all scrambled as it went flying through the air. Through the piles of bodies, I saw it! Hot pink and all! I was the victor! I really can’t believe I’m admitting this. By the way, you’re a very exciting blogger. Your stories are interesting, and everyone loves a good contest. Keep up the good work!

  56. If it’s not too late to wager a guess, here goes:

    4. Viva la Vida, Coldplay
    8. Bittersweet Symphony, The Verve
    9. The Saints Are Coming, U2 & Green Day
    17. F-Stop Blues, Jack Johnson
    18. Kingdom Come, Coldplay

  57. Random guessing here. I just had to play.
    #1
    #6
    #8
    #9
    #18
Love your little sister who misses you in California!
    P.S.
Heather didn’t give the slightest clue of the answers. She is NOT like that.

  58. Hi. I say the following:
    1. Clocks/Coldplay
    3. Kryptonite/3 DD
    11. Flake/JJ
    12. All Because of You /U2
17 F-Stop Blues/JJ (because if you like Jack Johnson,
    they’re all good!)

    Fun stuff.

  59. Nice try peoples but still no winner. I’m thinking tomorrow night (unless someone pulls through before then) I’ll list everyone with three correct answers and give a tie-breaking question. Then we can move on to bigger and better blog topics…

  60. Here’s my measly guess based on cool titles:

    4, 5, 9, 11, 17

    Thanks for your post, Heather.

  61. The contest is now closed. Thanks for all your guesses. I’ll post the answers and the tie breaking question tonight.
Cheers and keep on rockin’ in the free world,
    Heather
