When your good friends’ son lands the leading role in the summer’s blockbuster movie by Steven Spielberg and J.J. Abrams, of course you stay up late to see the 12:01 a.m. showing the day it is released. And that is exactly what we did last night along with a couple hundred other friends, classmates, and  family of Joel Courtney. We watched Super 8.

And here’s what I’d like to say about it. Though this is not my favorite genre of movie, having lots of things blowing up and jumping out,  it was fun and I enjoyed it.  Joel (who played Joe) was amazing. He was just crazy good! You see a film from a little bit of a different angle when a friend is playing in it. How did he do that? He gave the leading character charm and sympathy, and I don’t say that just because I know him.

So hat’s off to Joel Courtney as his acting career is launched! God is certainly crowning him with success at a very early age, and I’ll be watching closely to see where this takes him and his family, and wishing him Godspeed!

  1. I’m hoping to see it next week. I went to see “Thor” a few weeks ago, and my favorite part was the “Super 8” trailer. I was excitedly explaining to my brother why it was so wonderful, but he didn’t muster a great deal of enthusiasm over his sister’s Internet friend’s kid. ;-P

  2. We just saw this yesterday and I must say God invests extraordinary favor in the most fun places. Like finding a your late mothers diamond ring in your childhood dress-up purse. It is not hard to be thrilled for Joel and excited for his future. Well done!

  3. Hubby and I saw Super 8 tonight. We really enjoy most of what J J Abrams does, so we were excited. This movie really lived up to our expectations, partly because the young cast was very charming!

  4. “…this is not my favorite genre of movie, having lots of things blowing up and jumping out…”

I think I should get discount admission to movies like this since I don’t actually see half of them. I was glad I had a shawl to hide under! But I’m even more glad I went to see it. Three cheers for Joel!

  5. I totally relate. An old family friend recently rocketed into the limelight with her own film, and we’ve been enjoying seeing the news everywhere!

It’s so fun to have that kind of connection. Sounds like you had a good time!

  6. I am visiting, a link from a link, and just wanted to say that I thought that Joel Courtney was great in Super 8. Good for him!

And thank you for Motherhood is a Mission Field. I’m printing it off for myself and to send to a few friends who still have little ones at their feet. Blessing to you.

  7. I have heard a lot of good things about this movie, but unfortunately I won’t be seeing it. I’m disappointed that this movie (especially with so many children in it) has so much profanity.

I understand that a friend of yours is in the film, and I’m really not trying to be argumentative. But I’m just wondering how a believer can sit through so much profanity in good conscience in light of Philippians 4:8?
